Education in America Needs Serious Reform
Education in America needs serious reform. The ways in which schools are to this day are the same way they were when our parents were in school. This way of teaching is getting very old and redundant. A change must be made soon. We are living in a time where technology is booming, where jobs require more education, and where secondary schools just haven’t caught up with the new fast-paced society. Here at CBHS in particular there are ways to “catch up”. Through programs such as Career Pathways, which will guide students into the path of their career choice. Block scheduling, better discipline, and various changes in school structure and curriculum can assist in this new restructure of education in America.
There are principles that can promote the base of the school. One would be, the school should help students to learn to use their minds well. The teacher should not just give forth information, but teach in a manor in which it helps the student to teach themselves on their own as well. If students rely on the teachers the whole time they aren’t learning anything at all except how to let others think for them, when they should think for themselves. The curriculum taught could have a big effect on this principle. The change to be made here is that the teachers start to change their agendas so that the things being taught will stimulate self thought and work. Such as when a student asks the teacher a question, the teacher answers back with another question. This often gets minds going. It may be a little annoying but it gets the job done.
A second principle is, school’s goals should be simple- “less is more.” The goals of a school should apply to all. So for example, fundraisers should not just be for the drama club, but should also go forth towards sports as well. No one should really feel like they are being left out of the school’s plan. Don’t expect whizzes, just let the students know that if they just do their honest best they will be able to make it.
A third principle is, maximum student capacity to a teacher is 80 students. We want the teachers to have a good relationship with their students. It is better to have 80 kids and know each by name, than to have 200 and know each by a student #. When the instructor knows the students personally they can help them better because they actually know somewhat of what is going on in their minds. The school’s structure could help with this principle. More classrooms could be built so that there aren’t too many kids in each class.
A fourth principle is to have students be required to do an exhibition in...
