“Grapes of Wrath” is a very educational film. It shows how farmers dealt when the dust storms started brewing. The storms would cause droughts, which led banks to take the farmers lands, because they were not producing enough crops due to the storms. This caused many hardships on the families such as the Joads. It also shows how two of the main characters, Tom Joad and Casey changed throughout the story just like any other “Okies” during that period.
There were many hardships on the Joads during this time of unemployment. Families heard that there were jobs out West in California. When the Joads traveled west, it took many days. During this film it showed how attached people were to their homes, by showing the Grandfather shouting and yelling like a child to stay. During the trip the Joads realized that Grandfather was ill and he later died. They could not afford a funeral, so they buried him on the side of the road with a note saying who he was and who buried him. There was also not enough food being fed to the family. They were constantly hungry.
When they got to California, there was another death in the family. The Grandmother also passed away. They buried her in California. When they asked people about the job offer that was on the banner they said they were all taken. They had to live on the side of the road with the rest of the other Okies. This continued for a while until they found low paying jobs. But they were not getting enough to eat with the jobs they had. Tom also murdered a security officer, because they were beating him, so they had to leave.
The people who changed throughout the film were Casey and Tom Joad. Casey was a drifter that did not care about anything. But after he went on the road trip with the Joads he was realizing why all the things that happened to them were happening. He established a reason to care. Tom Joad is similar in a way, because he did not really understand what was going on around him. Later on in the story when Casey was killed he understood. He understood that they had to take a stand for themselves, just like the other people who were on strike.
“Grapes of Wrath” is a very educational film. Many people can learn valuable things from this film. The film does an excellent job of portraying the hardships the families had to face. When I watched this film it made me appreciate what some people had to go through in order to provide a better future for themselves and the for rest of the United States of America.
