Deciding whether or not to live with your parents while going to college is very difficult thing to do. You are afraid that it is going to be just like more days of high school with your parents treating you as small child. This can be avoided if you and your parents both follow three simple rules: treat each other as peers, respect each other’s privacy, and help each other out.
The first rule is usually the most difficult for both you and your parents. It basically consists of you and your parents viewing each other as adults, not as a child and two adults. If you still act like a child and pout when you don’t get your way, your parents are definitely not going to look upon you as a peer, but rather look down upon you as a person of lesser value.
Both of parties have reached a point in which they view each other as equals, it is very important that they respect each other’s privacy. This is very difficult for your parents to do because they still think they need to know everything you are involved in. They never hesitate to tell you something that is not your business, but if you were the one to shut them out, there would certainly be a price to pay. But it is OK. Your parents just want to know that you are OK and that you are not in any trouble.
The last rule is the most difficult for the child because it involves doing voluntary work. Your parents are not going to expect to have to tell you to clean your room and put your dishes away when you are eighteen years old. If you were living in an apartment with friends instead of living at home, you would most likely help keep the place in order. Almost nobody likes to live in a dirty place. This role will not only impress and please your parents, but it will give you a great feeling of satisfaction.
As long as you and your parents learn to treat each other as peers, respect each other’s privacy, and help each other out, you will be able to survive the college experience successfully. It’s very easy to do, and it will make you your and parents happy.
