The Bonding of a Man and a Woman

In the short story, “ The Storm,” Kate Chopin briefly lets us sense the feeling there is between a woman and a man when two hearts collide. What makes a man and a woman connect? Is it the smell of one another’s cologne, or is it the look in the eyes of the other? Why do we have these feelings that go beyond our imagination? Why is it that Calixta cheated on Bobinot? Was there a sense of boredom in her life or was Calixta just looking for a little passion from an up-scale kind of guy. Was Bobinot not the man of her dreams?
Calixta, being a housewife, seems very bored with her life. In the beginning of the story Chopin shows Calixta sitting “at a side window sewing furiously on the sewing machine” ( 250). As the beginning scenes go on, we see her cleaning up the house. Bobinot’s Sunday clothes are hanging out to dry when she realizes that the storm is about to hit. Calixta then decides that she should pick up his clothes and bring them in so they do not get wet. This scene shows us that Calixta is a housewife and it is her job to clean up after the boys.
We also see that Bobinot is of the lower class kind of gentleman. When Bobinot is at the store he “purchased a can of shrimps, of which Calixta was fond of” (250). Calixta was probably fond of the shrimps but she might prefer instead to have a rose or maybe a bouquet of flowers from him. Alcee, being of a higher class, would have brought her a rose and maybe a gift to show her that he loved her. Alcee is more of an elegant kind of guy. It is clear that Calixta and Bobinot are not very wealthy, and that if Calixta was married to Alcee she would get more enjoyment out of life.
